Typhoid and Paratyphoid fevers are commonly grouped together under the collective term ‘Enteric fever’. Typhoid is caused by Salmonella typhi and paratyphoid is caused by either Salmonella paratyphi A, B, or C. These Salmonelloses are highly adapted infections of man, having no animal or environmental reservoir. Occasionally other Salmonellae may cause an enteric fever-like syndrome. This assay does not detect Paratyphi B or C. A negative result does not preclude the possibility of infection with Salmonella typhi/Salmonella paratyphi A. |
