Legionella pneumonia serogroup 1 is responsible for most infections in humans leading to nearly 10% of cases of Atypical pneumonia. Mycoplasma pneumonia produces pneumonia most frequently in children and adolescents. Coxiella burnetti causes Q fever leading to Atypical pneumonia, Hepatitis, or Endocarditis. Chlamydophila pneumonia causes respiratory infections particularly Bronchitis and Pneumonia, especially in elderly people & is responsible for nearly 10% of all cases of pneumonia. Adenovirus causes upper respiratory tract & pharyngoconjunctival infections. It may also cause low respiratory tract infections. Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is the major causative agent of respiratory infections in children under 2 years of age. The influenza virus may lead to serious complications in patients with underlying pathology. It is difficult to reach a clinical diagnosis during epidemics as it can be confused with other respiratory diseases. Parainfluenza virus serotypes 1, 2 & 3 cause Croup in children 2-4 years old. Serotypes 1 & 2 usually produce endemic disease whereas serotype 3 leads to epidemics. |
