Interstitial deletion of the long arm of chromosome 5 occurs as a sole abnormality or in combination with additional aberrations in Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). It is seen in 30% of cases of Primary MDS & 50% of cases of Secondary MDS. 5q-syndrome, a subtype of low-risk MDS, is characterized by an isolated 5q deletion and <5% blasts in the bone marrow. However, MDS patients with complex chromosomal aberrations including 5q deletion have a poor prognosis and show progression to Acute myeloid leukemia (AML). |
