| EX2069 VON WILLEBRAND FACTOR COLLAGEN BINDING ACTIVITY (vWF:CB) |
| Specimen: |
3 mL whole blood in 1 Blue Top (Sodium Citrate) tube. Mix thoroughly by inversion. Transport to Lab within 4 hours. If this is not possible, make PPP within 1 hour of the collection as follows: Centrifuge sample at 3600 rpm for 15 min. & transfer supernatant to a clean plastic tube. Centrifuge this supernatant again at 3600 rpm for 15 mins. & finally, transfer the supernatant (PPP) to 1 labeled clean plastic screw-capped vial. FREEZE IMMEDIATELY. Ship frozen. DO NOT THAW. |

Von Willebrand factor plays a key role in Primary & Secondary hemostasis. In the latter role, it serves as a carrier protein for Factor VIII. It is the most common inherited bleeding disorder characterized by easy bruising and prolonged bleeding from mucosal surfaces. Von Willebrand factor collagen binding activity (vWF: CB) is used as a supplemental assay to factor VIII activity, vWF: Ag, and vWF: RCo assays in typing of vWD. vWF: CB is a measure of vWF interaction with the subendothelial collagen and shows preferential sensitivity to high molecular weight multimers (HMWM). It helps to distinguish vWD types 2A & 2B from 2M. |
