EX2068      VON WILLEBRAND DISEASE (VWD) PANEL
Specimen: 6 mL whole blood in 2 Blue Top (Sodium Citrate) tubes. Mix thoroughly by inversion. Transport to Lab within 4 hours. If this is not possible, make PPP within 1 hour of the collection as follows: Centrifuge sample at 3600 rpm for 15 min. & transfer supernatant to a clean plastic tube. Centrifuge this supernatant again at 3600 rpm for 15 mins. & finally, transfer the supernatant (PPP) to 2 labeled clean plastic screw-capped vials. FREEZE IMMEDIATELY. Ship frozen. DO NOT THAW.

Comment: It is recommended that the patient discontinues Heparin for 1 day and Oral Anticoagulants for 7 days prior to sampling as these drugs may affect test results. Discontinuation should be with prior consent from the treating Physician.

Usage: von Willebrand disease (VWD) is the most common inherited bleeding disorder and is classified into three types type 2 is further divided into 4 types. Bleeding symptoms usually involve mucous membranes and are similar to those seen with platelet disorders like epistaxis, oral bleeding, menorrhagia, etc. vWD panel aids in diagnosing all types of vWD, as no single test can diagnose all the types of vWD.
