Enteric (Typhoid) fever is a systemic disease characterized by fever & abdominal pain due to infection by Salmonella typhi or paratyphi. Most commonly it is food or waterborne transmission. The incubation period varies from 5-21 days. The severity of the disease depends upon host factors like immunosuppression, previous exposure, acid suppression therapy & vaccination status. It can lead to gastrointestinal bleeding in 10-20% of cases and intestinal perforation in 1-3% of cases. |
