Acute viral respiratory illnesses are among the most common human diseases with rates being higher among children from 1-6 years. Morbidity from respiratory illnesses is 30-50% in adults and 60-8-% in children. The use of antibacterial agents to treat viral respiratory infections represents a major source of abuse of antibiotics. Two-thirds to three-fourths of cases of acute respiratory illnesses are caused by viruses involving mainly the upper respiratory tract but can affect the lower respiratory tract, especially in children. |
