| Specimen: |
5 mL (4 mL min.) serum from 2 SSTs AND 2 mL (1 mL min.) plasma from 1 Lavender Top (EDTA) tube. Separate plasma within 2 hours of collection. Ship refrigerated or frozen. The patient should avoid Biotin at least 8 hours prior to specimen collection AND 3 mL (2 mL min.) whole blood from 1 Lavender Top (EDTA) tube. Ship refrigerated. DO NOT FREEZE AND 3 mL whole blood in 1 Blue Top (Sodium Citrate) tube. Mix thoroughly by inversion. Transport to Lab within 4 hours. If this is not possible, make PPP within 1 hour of the collection as follows: Centrifuge sample at 3600 rpm for 15 min. & transfer supernatant to a clean plastic tube. Centrifuge this supernatant again at 3600 rpm for 15 min. & finally, transfer the supernatant (PPP) to one labeled clean plastic screw-capped vial. FREEZE IMMEDIATELY. Ship frozen. DO NOT THAW. |

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pleiotropic cytokine with a wide range of functions. IL-6 production is rapidly induced in the course of acute inflammatory reactions associated with injury, trauma, stress, infection, brain death, neoplasia, and other situations. Sequential measurements of IL-6 in serum or plasma of patients admitted to the intensive care unit were found to be useful in evaluating the severity of SIRS (Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome), sepsis & septic shock and to predict the outcome of these patients. IL-6 is also useful as an early alarm marker for the detection of neonatal sepsis. It also plays a role in chronic inflammation e.g. Rheumatoid arthritis. This panel also helps to assess if a patient is likely to develop complications like a cytokine storm & coagulation defects due to Sars-CoV-2 infection. |
