Prolactin is a pituitary hormone involved in the stimulation of milk production, salt & water regulation, growth & development, and reproduction. Prolactin-producing cells constitute about 20% of the cells of the anterior pituitary. This test is used to subclassify pituitary adenomas of which 31% are prolactin-containing adenomas. Two-thirds of these are monohormonal while one-third are multi-hormonal. |
