Usage: CD163 is a macrophage-specific protein and identifies cells of monocytic/ histiocytic lineage. A high CD163 expression in macrophages is a characteristic of tissues responding to inflammation. Thus CD163 is a potential inflammation biomarker and a therapeutic target. It is used to evaluate and classify tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) and over-expression is associated with a worse prognosis.
