EX0230      BONE MARROW EXAMINATION PANEL 2
Specimen: 2 mL (1 mL min.) Bone Marrow Aspirate in 1 Lavender Top (EDTA) tube AND 4 Bone Marrow Aspirate Smears AND 4 mL (2 mL min) whole blood in 1 Lavender Top (EDTA) tube AND 2 peripheral blood smears. Air dry & fix all smears in 100% Methanol for 30 minutes AND Bone Marrow Trephine biopsy in 10% formal saline. Ship refrigerated. DO NOT FREEZE.

Comment: Special stains include Prussian Blue Reaction for Iron & Reticulin stain.

Usage: Examination of Bone Marrow is required for further workup of hematological abnormalities observed in peripheral blood, staging for bone marrow involvement by metastatic tumors, assessment of infectious disease processes including fever of unknown origin, and in the evaluation of metabolic storage diseases. Aspirated marrow cells allow better appreciation of subtle differences in cell cytology whereas Trephine biopsy specimens are better for estimating the cellularity and architecture of bone marrow in the diagnosis of Aplastic anemia, Lymphomas, Granulomatous disease, and Metastatic tumors.
